Rome McNary, the winningest softball coach in Western Texas College history, is returning to the college.

Following the resignation of Steve Kissel, who left WTC with a three-year record of 76-77, Western's president, Dr. Mike Dreith, said he was surprised and pleased to learn that McNary was interested in returning to the college.

"Rome was wonderfully successful at WTC," said Dreith. "We know his return means good things for our softball team and athletic program."

McNary was hired pending board of trustee approval after spending last season as the head softball coach at Victoria West High School and the two previous seasons at Victoria Memorial. He is a native of Victoria. McNary also served as a Physical Education Instructor at Mitchell School in Victoria.

"I had a lot of success at WTC," said McNary. "The college is moving in the right direction and I will greatly enjoy being back in Snyder."

At WTC, McNary took the program to its only regional title and national tournament berth (2007) and posted a three-year record of 122-89. Dreith said he and college athletic director Tammy Davis were in total agreement that McNary would be a good choice to return to the college ranks.

"Rome is the right person for the job and we are so very fortunate to have him on board," said Davis.
