
After a 30-minute rest Coffman began competition in the heptathlon pole vault, where he cleared 12 feet, 3 ½ inches to place fifth and score 549 points.
Coffman ran a seasons best in the final event of the heptathlon competition, the 1,000 meter run, and crossed the line in 2:52.68, just behind Neosho's Will Washington. The time was good for 738 points and moved Coffman up to second place and gave SPC eight more team points.
At 11 a.m. the women entered the throwing ring for the weight throw and freshman Kelly Closse continued her winning ways as she won her second event of the meet with a throw of 57-00.00. She defeated her nearest competitor by nearly 12 inches. Teammate Melinda Bendik also competed in the event, finishing ninth.
Also beginning at 11 a.m. was the men's triple jump, a crucial event for the SPC men who had three competitors entered. Freshman Dellon Williams and Kyron Blaise jumped 51-03.00 and 51-02.25, and finished second and third, respectively. The jumps were both seasonal bests and earned the Texans 14 more points.
Colleen Felix led a trio of Lady Texans in the 1 p.m. women's triple jump as she finished second with a leap of 40-07.50 to earn eight points. Kia Wansley and Shaneika McRae added eight more for a total of 16 in the event as they finished fourth and sixth.
The men's high jump turned out to be a big scoring event for the Texans as they earned 13 points in the event. Wade Thornton led the charge as he finished second, soaring over the bar at 6-09.75. Devin Swain finished fifth and Demarius Bell earned a point in eighth.
The men's 4x800 meter relay team of Anthony Pequeno, Mitchell Driver, Robert Castanon, and Derek Brest finished in sixth place and earned three points.
At 1:05 p.m. Colleen Felix got into the blocks for the women's 55 meter hurdles. Felix, the eighth qualifier entering the final, finished fourth with a time of 8.05 seconds.
In the men's 55 hurdles, the favorite entering the final was probably Barton County's Ryan Brathwaite. After a false start by Brathwaite, SPC's Bryce Brown stole the show winning the race in a season's best of 7.34 seconds to earn the distinction of NJCAA champion.
Gladys Chumba completed a busy weekend as she finished fourth in the women's mile with a time of 5:16.91. Yesterday, Chumba finished second in the 5,000 meter run and won the 3,000 to earn a total of 23 points for the Lady Texans.
Fred Samoei began a busy day by winning the mile run in a time of 4:12.98. Samoei also had the 800 meter run and 1,000 meter run finals to go in the next few hours. Tallam Kipruto added another point for the Texans when he finished in eighth place.
Shakeeri Cole smashed the ATC record on her way to becoming a NJCAA champion as she ran 1:32.65. Cole then had to stay loose for the upcoming 800 meter run.
The Texans scored 19 points in the men's 600 meter run by taking second, third, and fourth in the event. Sharif Webb led the Texan trio, finishing as the runner up behind Tararie Henry of Barton County. Webb. Ran 1:18.68. Marcelis Lynch finished third in 1:20.28 and Stephon Beckford followed in 1:21.17.
Shawna Anderson earned five points for the SPC women when she ran 6.93 seconds in the women's 55 dash, good for fourth place.
Edina Brooks ran a season's best in the 400 meters to earn runner-up honors in the event. Brooks ran 55.57 seconds in the event, earning eight points.
SPC's Beijing Olympian at 400 meters, Renny Quow, continued his dominance in the event by adding the 2009 NJCAA 400 meter indoor title to his resume as defeated last year's champion from Essex, running 46.45.
Shakeeri Cole only had one hour to prepare for the women's 800 meters after winning the 600. Cole was not fazed a bit and won her second event of the day in a time of 2:21.57.
Fred Samoei and Chicanel Cole added 15 points to the Texans' team score as Samoei won his second event of the day and Cole finished fourth. Samoei ran a seasonal best of 1:50.38 and still had the 1,000 meter race to go.
Rodney Campbell finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.23 seconds to finish in fifth place.
Lorianne Pattee added two more points by finishing seventh place for the Lady Texans, who at this point had the team title in hand, by running 3:11.03 in the 1,000-meter run.
Fred Samoei won his third title of the day in the men's 1,000-meter run by smoking the field in 2:24.46. The third title gave Samoei 30 points for the meet and helped earn him the distinction of Male Track Athlete of the Meet. Mitchell Driver ran a great race to finish fifth in the race.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Edina Brooks, Nicquel Thomas, Allysha Wilson and Shakeeri Cole earned eight more points for the Lady Texans when they finished second in 3:46.12. The Lady Texans finished the meet with 139 ½ points. Second place Barton County finished with 89 points. This was the first NJCAA track and field title for the South Plains College Lady Texans.
