The Lady Bears of Brookhaven College opened NJCAA play this weekend with a 4-0 record en route to a tournament championship at their own "Lady Bears Invitational" held in Farmers Branch, Texas.

The number one ranked team and defending NJCAA DIII National Champions, hosted all Division One teams. The Bears defeated Ranger College 3-0 and Paris Junior College

3-0 on Friday. On Saturday morning, Brookhaven defeated Western Texas College 3-1 and then swept #23 nationally ranked Hill College 3-0 for the tournament championship.

For their efforts, three Lady Bears were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore outside hitter Chelcy Trejo (John Horn High, Mesquite, TX) and Pre-Season 1st Team All-American, sophmore setter Callie Martin (Royce City High, Royce City, TX) were selected to the All-Tournament team. Freshmen middle blocker Sarah Terry

( Richardson High, Garland, TX) garnered the MVP award of the All-Tournament team.

Coach Jason Hopkins:

"I am very pleased with our opening weekend. We have hosted this tournament for six years now. This is the first time we were actually able to keep the trophy!"

"The team played very well with each other. I have 13 on my roster and I can honestly say that this is the deepest we've ever been at Brookhaven. I never had to use a set lineup. I tossed six on the floor true to position, and they made it happen from there. Playing time was very equal among all, so it truly feels like a "team" victory."

The Lady Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, September 2 as they will travel to Ranger College (Ranger, TX) for a 6:00PM match.
