The Odessa College softball team is packing its bags and getting ready to head to St. George, Utah.

The Lady Wranglers won the Region V West Softball Championship on Sunday with a 5-3 victory over Midland College.

Whitney Kuhrt led Odessa College in the championship game, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Kuhrt said she was at a loss for words when trying to describe winning the tournament for a second consecutive year.

"I can't even describe it," she said. "Just knowing that we beat them in one game, knowing that they're going home, they're done with softball and we're going to continue on, that's just an amazing feeling."

The Lady Wranglers (33-27) figured out Midland College starting pitcher A.J. Woodward's rise ball in the third inning and scored three runs on four doubles in the inning.

"Everyone was freaking out because we hadn't seen that pitcher this year," Kuhrt said. "We knew they were going to throw her. It was the last game, and we haven't seen her. She's just a pitcher: not a big deal."

In the fifth inning, Kuhrt - named the tournament MVP after going 9-for-11 on the weekend with five doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored - led off with her second double of the game, chasing Woodward from the game. Megan Penneau came on in relief and immediately gave up a single to Khiana Carter and an RBI single to Kristy Smith. Carter scored on the play to give Odessa College a 5-2 lead, when Midland College catcher Tiffaney King couldn't hold onto the ball trying to tag out Kuhrt.

Katelyn Stanley got the start for Odessa College and gave up three runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. She also kept the aggressive Lady Chaps (36-10) off balance, getting nine outs on the first pitch of an at-bat.

"I was just working off the plate, trying to get them to chase that ball," Stanley said. "I use my movement and once they go for it, that's all I need."

The Lady Wranglers are headed to the national tournament for the fourth time in the school's history, all under Prickett. They finished third in 2005, fifth in 2006 and ninth in 2009. He said despite the intense games between Midland College and Odessa College, both teams were deserving of moving on to the national tournament.

"They're great girls," Prickett said. "It's one of those teams we've had a lot of bitter battles with, but it's one of those things where you hated to see a loser this year."

The tournament is scheduled as a 16-team, double-elimination tournament between May 20 and May 22 at the Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah.
