HUTCHINSON, Kan. - South Plains College track and field dominated the
NJCAA outdoor championships as the Lady Texans won the meet with 192
points and 11 event titles, while the Texans scored 142 points for top
honors and took home four event championships.
Sophomore Colleen Felix added a second NJCAA championship to her resume
for the weekend (3rd overall) when she won the javelin by more than
five feet with a winning throw of 153-04. Felix is the defending
champion in the event and also won the triple jump during Friday's
competition.
Kelly Closse earned her fifth career NJCAA
championship when she was victorious in the women's discus throw.
Closse's best attempt of 156-02 won the competition by nearly 9-feet.
She won the women's shot put yesterday and also won the outdoor shot
put held in this venue in 2009 as well as the indoor shot put and
weight throw in March 2009.
Dellon Williams and Kyron Blaise
came up just short in their bid to sweep the top two spots in the long
jump when they finished second and third overall with leaps of 25-01.75
and 24-09.00. Anthony May had a best jump of 24-03.00 to finish
seventh.
Quincy Wilson added a second runner-up finish after he
hurled the discus 173-01 on his fifth attempt. Daniel Rodriguez and
Dillon Welch also found themselves on the podium after finishing fifth
and sixth with throws of 159-08 and 149-00, respectively.
In the
women's long jump, Erynn Young took runner-up honors when she leaped
19-06.75 on her final attempt. Her teammate, Shaneika McRae, finished
seventh.
Soon after the long jump Young cleared 5-07.00 to claim
third place in the women's high jump. Jona McGowen and Kristian
Spencer also claimed spots on the award stand with sixth and seventh
place finishes.
Anthony May passed on the opening height in the
men's high jump and then cleared the next three bars on his first
attempt to put himself right in the mix for the championship. He could
not clear 6-10.75, however, and settled for third place and honorable
mention all-American honors.
Windy conditions could not deter
the Lady Texan 4x100 meter relay team as leadoff leg Shawna Anderson
took control of the race early and teammates Janelle Redhead, Nicquel
Thomas and Jura Levy finished off the competition in a time of 44.80
seconds, just off the Lady Texan season best of 44.63 seconds.
One
hour later, Levy took top honors in the 100 meter dash final when she
ran a SPC school record time of 11.15 seconds and just missed leading
her teammates to a sweep when Redhead finished third in 11.44 seconds
and Anderson was fourth in 11.49 seconds.
At 3:05 p.m., less
than one hour after the 100 meter dash final, Levy again dominated the
competition with another school record time of 22.95 seconds in the 200
meter dash, this time leading her teammates to a 1-2-3 sweep. Redhead,
who was the school record holder before the race began, dipped under
her old record with a time of 23.04 seconds, while Thomas finished with
a time of 23.52 seconds for third place.
The Texan 4x100 meter
relay team of Niko Williams-Richey, Isaiah Gill, Devin Hill and Rondell
Bartholomew battled tough but came up just short in their bid to claim
the NJCAA championship when they crossed the line second with a time of
40.78 seconds.
Texan 400 meter runners Rondell Bartholomew,
Anton Kokorin and Troy Faulkner entered Saturday's final with the three
fastest times and did not disappoint as they swept the NJCAA 400 meter
final with Bartholomew taking top honors with a time of 45.53 seconds.
Kokorin was second in 46.08 seconds, while Faulkner was third when he
crossed the finish line with a time of 47.50 seconds.
Kokorin later finished third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.02 seconds.
Shakeeri
Cole successfully defended her NJCAA title in the 800 meters when she
led from wire-to-wire and crossed the line in a season best time of
2:08.50, just missing the SPC school record. Lisa Forsberg took the
second spot when she finished with a time of 2:10.82.
Marcelis Lynch also led from the gun in the men's 800 meter run and held on for the victory with a time of 1:52.21.
Lynch's
victory in the men's 800 meter run is not only significant due to
winning a NJCAA championship, but also because it helped the Texans and
Lady Texans sweep the event for the second straight year. In 2009 Cole
and Fred Samoei won 800 titles for SPC.
Entering the 2010
outdoor season Chante'sean White had never run the 400 meter hurdles
and she is now the NJCAA champion in the event when she broke her own
school record and nearly dipped under the 60-second barrier with a time
of 1:00.04.
Both the Lady Texans and Texans had easily wrapped
up the team titles by the time the 4x400 meter relays were scheduled to
run as the SPC women held a 60 point lead and the Texans were up by 52
points.
Shakeeri Cole ran a great leadoff leg and quickly put
the Lady Texans into the lead. Levy, Angelique Lykes and Redhead
easily handled the rest and ran away for the win in 3:38.61.
Kervin
Morgan, Troy Faulkner, Anton Kokorin and Rondell Bartholomew also
dominated the 4x400 meter field when they crossed the line with the
winning time of 3:07.79 to complete a well rounded meet.
In the
post meet ceremonies, head coach Chris Beene was named men's and
women's coach of the meet and Dellon Williams was honored as the men's
field event athlete of the meet. The Texans have now won three
consecutive outdoor championships, while 2010 marks the second in a row
for the Lady Texans.
