PLANO,Texas - The New Mexico Military Institute Bronco Men's Tennis team stepped up play at the NJCAA National Championships, earning 17.5 team points for a 12th place finish in the 26 team tournament. 
 

Singles Play:
Daneric Hazelman picked up  two points with a first round win in Flight 1 singles play before being defeated by the No. 5 seed, Javier Millian, from Scottdale CC, 7-6(4); 6-2.
Flight 1 Singles Bracket/Results

William O'Connell also earned a pair of points with a first round win in flight 2 singles. He too was defeated by a Scottsdale CC opponent bearing the No. 5 seed, Sean O'Grady, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Jiri Zelinka had two wins for 3 points in flight 3 singles, reaching the quarterfinals, where he lost to Johnson County College's Luka Radulovic 6-4, 6-2.
Flight 3 Singles Bracket/Results

In flight 4, Lorenzo Pineda, after losing his first round match, came back to win the back draw over Itawamba CC's Josh Fulgham 6-2, 6-2. His three wins and one bye gave the team 2 points, and is the first time a Bronco player has won the consolation bracket.

Juan Vicencio also dropped his first match in the flight 5 singles bracket. Like Pineda, he fared well in the backdraw,  reaching the Consolation Championship match, where he was defeated by Itawamba CC's Wesley Raines, 6-3, 6-2. His three wins were good for 1.5 team points.

Justin Romero picked up 2 team points with a first round win in flight 6. He was defeated by the flight's No.1 seed, Pete Thomason from Tyler JC in the second round, 6-3, 6-0.

Doubles Play:
The flight 1 doubles combination of Zelinka and Vicencio was unable to score a win, losing their first round match to Meridian CC, 6-2, 6-2, and the first round of the backdraw, 7-6(3), 6-2 to McHenry College.

O'Connell and Pineda made a run to the quarterfinals of flight 2 doubles with a pair of wins and three points, before being bumped off by the No.1 seeded team from Tyler JC, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4.

Hazelman and Romero won their first match in flight 3, good for two team points, and almost pulled off the upset against the No. 5 seed from Johnson County College in the second round: 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-5.
Flight 3 Doubles Bracket/Results

This is third year in a row that coach Gene Hardman has taken his team to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament, and the third year in a row the team has finished in the top 20 in the nation. Both previous teams finished 10th.
