LUBBOCK - The 2012 NJCAA Region 5 Baseball tournament will be held May 12-16 at Texas Tech University's newly renovated Dan Law Field in Lubbock and is hosted by Lubbock Sports.

The top four teams from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference will be playing for the opportunity to represent Region 5 at the JUCO World Series held May 26-June 2 in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The McLennan Community College men's and women's golf teams are ranked in the final Golfstat polls of the season.

The Highlanders sit at No. 10. Meridian remains in the top spot, followed by Darton in second and Brevard in third. Other Texas colleges in the poll are Western Texas at fourth, Odessa in fifth and Midland in seventh.

The NJCAA Region 5 softball tournament's have arrived. The Region 5 West schools will play at Lubbock Christian University May 3-5 while the North schools will participate at Texas Woman's University in Denton.

The winner of both tournaments will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament May 17-19 at Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah.

Odessa College officially named Tra Arnold its new men's basketball head coach in a press release Tuesday morning. Arnold had held the same position at Blinn College for the last three seasons.

In his final season with the Buccaneers, Arnold guided his team to a 27-7 record and a berth in the Region XIV tournament championship game. Arnold came to Blinn College as an assistant coach in 2005 and since then 24 of his players have signed with Division I teams, according to his resume.

For the second straight day, Odessa College softball player Morgan Colburn found herself watching a fly ball sail toward the left-field foul pole.

After a few excruciating seconds, the freshman hopped in the air and celebrated after she hit a two-out, walk-off home run that gave her team a 6-5 victory Friday against Midland College in the opener of a doubleheader at Wrangler Field.

"I was watching the ball the whole way," Colburn said of the homer. "I thought it was going foul but when I saw the blue (umpire) signal home run, I was excited."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - If there was any doubt as to who the No. 1 ranked team in the NJCAA should be, the South Plains College Texans settled the debate with an 81-68 victory over second-ranked Northwest Florida State Saturday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena to claim their second national basketball championship in school history and cap an undefeated season.

South Plains will finish the season with a record of 36-0 and are only the sixth team in NJCAA history to run the table.

The NJCAA No. 1 ranked South Plains College Texans and the New Mexico JC Lady T-Birds will represent the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and Region 5 after claiming the Region 5 men's and women's tournament crowns last week.

Both tournaments are held March 20-24 with the men playing in Hutchinson, Kan. and the women in Salina, Kan.

LUBBOCK, Texas - For the fourth consecutive year, the Region 5 men's and women's basketball tournaments will be held at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. The tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday, March 8 with the first round of men's games. The women will begin play Friday, March 9 and the tournament will conclude with men's and women's championship games Sunday, March 11.

ROSWELL, N.M. -Stanton Kidd scored a game high 23 points to help lead the South Plains College Texans to an 82-68 victory over the New Mexico Military Broncos Thursday night at the Cahoon Armory gymnasium in Roswell. The victory moves South Plains to 29-0 overall and 14-0 in conference play, making them the first team in school history to finish the regular season without a loss.

Former McLennan Community College basketball player Eric Dawson has signed a 10-day deal with the San Antonio Spurs and made his NBA debut this week.

Dawson, a San Antonio native, played for MCC in 2000 before transferring to Midwestern State University. He has spent the last five seasons playing for the Austin Toros of the NBA D-League and has also spent time playing in Asia and South America.

The Spurs called up Dawson following the injury of Tiago Splitter. In his debut game Tuesday night, Dawson scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds in 31:41 on the floor.

Midland College softball coach Tommy Ramos garnered his 600th career win on Saturday, February 4, 2012 in a 9-0 victory over Cisco Junior College (TX). Ramos who is in his 14th year as head coach of the Lady Chap's, started the program and is the only head coach the program has ever known. [Women's Tennis] Lady Bronco tennis hoping to return to national stage

In 2011, the Lady Bronco tennis team finished eighth in the nation after the national tournament. And this year, with five of the six freshmen who competed last year back as sophomores, coach Zeljka Vidic is very excited.

"So far, these girls are good," she said. "They fight; the work hard; they're willing to learn new things and we have a good group and I'm very proud and excited."
