[Men's Basketball] Texans sit atop the latest NJCAA polls at No. 1

LEVELLAND, Texas - The South Plains College Texan basketball team's undefeated record has helped them to receive 14-of-16 first place votes and the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA basketball polls released Tuesday afternoon.

South Plains (18-0, 3-0 WJCAC) began the season with a No. 18 national ranking in the pre-season poll, but quickly sped up to No. 7 in the November 15 poll after knocking off ranked opponents Trinity Valley and Lamar State-Port Arthur in the second weekend of the season.

J.E. Pressly calls himself a 12-year man. He spent 12 years as the Odessa High baseball coach upon moving to the Permian Basin, served 12-year stints as a county commissioner and justice of the peace, and is now in his 12th year as a member of the Odessa College Board of Trustees.

Congratulations to MC women's basketball coach Ron Jones who recorded his 500th collegiate coaching victory in a 65-60 contest with the New Mexico Junior College Lady T-Birds back on December 1, 2011. The game was played in Hobbs, NM during the 2011 WJCAC Preconference Tournament.

Jones, who began his college coaching career at Western Texas College in Snyder, opened this season with a 491-138 record. The 2011-12 season marks his 20th as a college coach (two seasons at Western Texas College and 18 at Midland College).

With their 93-56 victory over Tomball College on Monday, January 2, the McLennan Community College Highlanders gave Kevin Gill his 400th career coaching victory.

Gill, who took over the reins of the Highlander program in 2002, entered this season with a record of 220 wins and only 65 losses as McLennan's head men's basketball coach and has led his team to the Region 5 tournament every year. Four times the Highlanders have advanced to the semi-final round of the tournament.

Something had to give. The scoreboard had become like the old truck that you loved all your life, but it only worked on certain schedules, never at the most critical times. Thirty seasons had come and gone and the original scoreboard at the Odessa College Sports Center was literally functioning on one leg. Replacement parts were difficult, if not impossible to find and repair was constantly required.

NEW YORK -- Marquette coach Buzz Williams didn't mince any words when he was asked about senior forward Jae Crowder.

"That's my guy. I'll row with that cat no matter where he goes when his career is over," Williams said. "We don't win that game without the character of our group, and Jae and D.J. (Darius Johnson-Odom) have done a great job leading our guys on a daily basis."

Crowder hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 6.3 seconds to play and the 11th-ranked Golden Eagles beat Washington 79-77 in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

In the first of three possible events, the MC basketball team showed their support for blindness prevention and the defeat of diseases that contribute to the loss of sight for Texans. The Chaparrals and Prevent Blindness Texas joined forces to help increase awareness of eye diseases, eye safety and chronic diseases that can rob people of their vision.

Barden (6' 5") recorded double-double performances in both of the Wranglers victories last week. Leading the upset charge, Barden tallied 25 points and 16 rebounds to knock-off No. 18 Seward CCC (Kan.) 74-55. The sophomore followed up the next day with 22 points and 12 rebounds in an 82-54 crushing of Hill College (Texas). No. 20 Odessa and Barden will look to continue moving up in the rankings this week when they host Coastal Bend College (Texas) Thursday and the University of Chihuahua (Mexico) Friday.

EIU men's basketball coach Mike Miller continues to revamp the Panthers roster with athletic, multi-dimensional players as he announced the signing of three players to open the NCAA's early national letter of intent period.

The New Mexico Military Institute and its 12th ranked Bronco football team are proud to announce that they will accept an invitation to play in the 2011 C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl on December 3rd. The game is slated to begin at 2 pm Central at Bulldawg Stadium in Copperas Cove, TX. NMMI will take on the 6th ranked Navarro College Bulldogs.

Three players representing two Region 5 schools recently signed National Letters of Intent with four-year schools. Two, Stanton Kidd and Greg Gainey, play basketball for South Plains Plains College in Levelland, Texas while Eric Brooks represents the McLennan Community College baseball team out of Waco.

The #3 ranked Midland College Chaps will open the home portion of the 2011-2012 season when they host the East-West Basketball Classic at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center. The Classic was the brainchild of former Midland College men's coach Ross Hodge who envisioned an eight-team tournament format featuring the best JUCO teams in the state of Texas. Due to the withdrawal of Tyler Junior College the event was reduced to a six team Classic format.

For former Midland College Lady Chap softball player Monique Corralez the 2011 MLB World Series bore special significance. Corralez played outfield for Midland College Coach Tommy Ramos from 2004-2006. She is currently employed with the Texas Rangers as an Community Outreach Assistant. Ms. Corralez works in the Foundation and Community Outreach Department of the club. Among her duties are working with the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation in various capacities including procuring signed team memorabilia items for the Foundation's Silent Auction, which raises money for scholarships for deserving students. Additionally, Ms. Corralez will make sure the scholarship monies are sent to the proper universities on the student's behalf. She also mans the auction booth during games in Arlington.
