LUBBOCK - There were a lot of shots fired through four rounds of play in the 2013 NJCAA Division I Golf Championships this week at The Rawls Course, but the final outcome came down to a single stroke.

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Cayla Petree has been named the ninth women's basketball coach in Angelo State history announced by athletic director Sean Johnson.

"I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this new era of Angelo State women's basketball," Petree said. "This program has a very high ceiling with one of the best facilities in the country, a great university and incredible support from the administration. This is a great place to do something really special. I can't wait to get to work and build something great."

The 2013 NJCAA Region 5 baseball tournament will begin Saturday, May 11 and run through May 15 at Quick Trip Park in Grand Prarie, Texas.

The top four teams from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) and the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) will be playing for the opportunity to represent Region 5 at the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Three Odessa College basketball players have signed national letters of intent to continue their careers after helping the Wranglers to a 25-8 record in 2012-13, the most victories for the program since the 2007-08 season.

The Lady Wranglers were firing on all cylinders Sunday as they soundly defeated rival Midland College 8-1 in the title game of the NJCAA Region V West Championship tournament at PlainsCapital Ballpark, wrapping up an unbeaten weekend that led to hoisting the trophy.

The Region 5 West softball tournament will begin a day later than anticipated due to inlcement weather on the South Plains. Scheduled to beging Thursday, May 2, tournament officials hope to get started Friday. The Region 5 North schools will be playing at Texas Woman's University in Denton.

The winner of both tournaments will advance to the NJCAA National tournament held May 15-18 in St. George, Utah.

Dennis Helms doesn't measure his success by wins and losses on the basketball court, although the former Odessa College men's coach experienced his fair share of victories.

When he looks back on his career, the one aspect he takes the most pride in is the positive impact he was able to make on the lives of his former players.

[Basketball] Eastfield Clinches Berth in National Tournament

The Eastfield Harvesters defeated Mountain View 84-72 on Monday night to win the Region V championship, avenging Thursday's loss to the Lions. The win means that Eastfield will head to New York on March 14 to play in the NJCAA Division III national championship tournament.

The El Paso Community College men's team was named The Academic Team of the Year by the National Junior College Cross Country Coaches Association with a GPA of 3.851 for the five-member qualifying team in the fall 2012 semester. Michael Grijalva and Angel De La Cruz also earned individual academic honors with a semester GPA of 4.00. There were 22 schools ranked with Hesston College (KS) finishing 2^nd with a 3.833 team GPA.

Eric Stubbs has learned a lot in a short time.

He learned he loves the game of basketball. And he's learned that he needs to keep learning in order to continue playing the sport.

Not a problem, he says.

"I was a slacker in high school. I didn't realize how important grades can be," said the 6-foot-10-inch sophomore post from Kansas City, Mo.
