Region 5 / Southwest District Championship - Day 1 Recap

Women's Quarterfinals 
 

GAME 1 FINAL:
Grayson - 84 
New Mexico – 77 

Grayson College outlasted New Mexico Junior College 84-77 in the opening game of the day. In a game that saw the lead change five times, the Vikings used a strong second half to pull away from NMJC late and move forward in the tournament.  Susan Fahnbulleh and Jaycee Ingram each scored a game high 26 points for the Vikings in the victory over the Thunderbirds. With the victory, Grayson advances to the 1:00pm semifinal on Friday.   

GAME 2 FINAL: 
McLennan – 72 
Howard – 56 

After a slow start, McLennan Community College took control in the second quarter defeating Howard College 72-56 in the second game of the day. McLennan had four players in double figures lead by Charnell Hoof with 19 points, Charravia Smith and Lanaijha Johnson both turned in a double-double for the Highlassies. Smith had 14 points and 15 rebounds while Johnson scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds. McLennan out re-bounded the Hawks 52 to 32 on the glass. With the win, McLennan advances to the 1:00pm semifinal on Friday against Grayson.  

GAME 3 FINAL: 
Collin – 85 
South Plains – 71 

Collin College used a strong first half to take the lead into the locker room and never looked back as they took care of South Plains College winning 85-71 in game three. Mufaro Mapengo scored 18 points off the bench for the Cougars and Gabby Morales and Ella Macleod each had 17 points in the victory. The Cougars advance to the 3:00pm semifinal game on Friday.  

GAME 4 FINAL: 
Clarendon – 57 
Hill – 46 

Clarendon College erased a 10-point deficit right before halftime and a dominate third quarter to defeat Hill College 57-46 in the fourth and final game of day one. The Bulldogs had three players in double figures lead by Armanda Sindalawa who had a game high 22 points. Zainab Olalekan recorded a double-double with 11 points and 18 rebounds, 10 coming on the offensive glass. With the win, Clarendon moves on to the 3:00pm semifinal game on Friday against Collin College.
