WC adds cross country, Majenge named head coach
Weatherford College is a place where students grow, athletes shine and progress pushes forward. As part of that initiative, the Weatherford College Athletics Program will add women's cross country and half marathon to the available programs for student athletes to compete in, beginning fall 2026.
While XC and half marathon will be offered as fall sports, any WC athlete is eligible to enter spring track meets as individual competitors.
Athletic Director Jeff Lightfoot is excited to add another opportunity for student athletes as WC continues to flourish.
"As we grow as an institution, we are looking to grow as an athletic department. We will continue to look to add programs that bring value to the community, support the mission of Weatherford College and create opportunities for students."
With the addition of a new program comes the addition of a new head coach. Previously at Ranger College, James Majenge has accepted the position for the WC cross country and half marathon teams.
"Our search for someone to lead our cross-country program drew interest from the track community all over the country," remarked Lightfoot about choosing the right candidate for the role.
"It was the largest candidate pool that I have seen in this type of search. Coach Majenge was the clear choice. His energy, passion to build a successful program and recruiting connections were a cut above. Coach Majenge will hit the ground running! I am excited to watch him grow the program at WC."
A South Africa native, Majenge was a decorated collegiate runner, competing at Cameron University after transferring from Monroe College.
- 2020-21 (Fifth-Year Senior): Won multiple titles including the 5K at the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Outdoor Championships, where he also earned silver in the 1500m. Never placed outside the top four in any meet, was named LSC Male Track Athlete of the Week (Mar. 17) and earned Second Team All-LSC honors with 18 points scored.
- 2019-20 (Senior): Won three of six cross country races, finished runner-up at the LSC Championships, placed 13th at the South-Central Region meet, and earned All-Region and All-American honors. Also recognized as the Cameron Athletics Male Athlete of the Year.
- 2018-19 (Junior): Won five consecutive cross-country races, captured the individual title at the LSC Championships, and was named LSC Newcomer of the Year. On the track, he won the 1500m at the LSC Outdoor Championships and earned multiple All-LSC honors.
At Monroe College: A five-time NJCAA All-American, 2017 NJCAA National Athlete of the Week, and the program's Rookie of the Year, competing at both indoor and outdoor NJCAA National Championships.
While at Ranger College, Majenge led the women's team to a conference championship and a top 12 finish at the NJCAA Cross Country National Championships, while guiding the men's team to a top 15 national finish, all in his first year as head coach.
In 2025, his teams were named the men's and women's conference champions and earned the men's and women's Coach of the Year award. His men's team finished 15th at national tournament, while his women's team finished 9th (first top ten finish in 15 years).
In the half marathon, Majenge coached a Region V individual champion, an athlete who placed third in Region V. He also coached four first team cross country and half marathon All-Americans.
"The athletics programs here at Weatherford College have a great culture," said Majenge on what drew him to WC. "They value winning and the development of student athletes. All the programs have all the support they need to be the best they can be."
Weatherford College is no stranger to fierce competition, and Majenge is ready to begin developing an outstanding team.
"I am grateful for this opportunity, and I am looking forward to building a team that will not only succeed in running but in class, too."
