Kailee May awarded AVCA Region Coach of the Year
For an outstanding 34-4 overall record and exceptional coaching performance, head coach Kailee May of the Weatherford College volleyball team will be honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as the AVCA Region Coach of the Year for Two-Year Colleges (Southwest Region). The nominees were chosen from a collection of conference awardees and regionally ranked coaches, while the winners were selected by a separate committee.
"It means a lot that other coaches saw me worthy enough to nominate me and found me deserving of an award like this," said May when receiving the good news.
"Hearing other coaches compliment the program and applaud our success is meaningful. It's easy to doubt yourself in a job like this, but for me personally, this has been a great reminder that the program is heading in the right direction."
This award is given across various levels and divisions, including college and high school, to coaches who not only perform at a highly competitive level throughout the season, but focus on their athletes and what it truly means to be a coach.
When asked about her coaching mindset, May declared, "My philosophy has always been to be focused on growth and learning on the court and off.
WC won fourth in the NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament this November, the best finish to a season since May began the program in 2021.
"We said from day one that we were working towards a national championship, and although we didn't reach that goal, we came awfully close."
